The goal of this initiative is to jointly develop a research agenda to help guide research investment and knowledge exchange activity, in health systems/ services and population/ public health, in Ontario over the next three to five years. Creating Together is providing the opportunity for a diverse range of research stakeholders to co-create a research agenda through province-wide consultations. Incorporating the voices of stakeholders will help to identify where investment in research can most improve the mental health and addictions systems.

It is anticipated that, eventually, results of Creating Together will benefit consumer/ survivors and family members by developing the knowledge to create stronger mental health and addictions systems.

An Evening with Jacquelyne Luce, Hosted by Rachel Epstein

Date: August 09, 2010
Time: 07:00 PM - 09:00 PM
Location: Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St West, Toronto Nearest Major
City: Toronto

Event Description: “BEYOND TORONTO’S EXPECTATIONS”: JACQUELYNE LUCE & RACHEL EPSTEIN

Prevailing views about assisted conception and the status of non-traditional families have improved dramatically over the past thirty years. So, when will it get easier to become a parent?
To launch her groundbreaking study, Beyond Expectation: Lesbian / Bi / Queer Women and Assisted Conception (University of Toronto Press), Germany-based author and activist Jacquelyne Luce will deliver a short talk based on her findings. Rachel Epstein, Coordinator of The Sherbourne Health Centre’s LGBTQ Parenting Network, will host the evening and moderate a Q&A with the audience. – A UTP Talks event presented with Gladstone Hotel.

Thurs Aug 12; 7:30pm (Doors 7pm) FREE
The Gladstone Hotel 2nd Floor Gallery
1214 Queen St West, Toronto

Books will be sold at the event by the University of Toronto Bookstore.

BEYOND EXPECTATION An in-depth study of lesbian, bi, and queer women’s experiences of thinking about and trying to become a parent, Beyond Expectation chronicles eighty-two women’s experiences, from 1980 to 2000, during a period that saw significant changes to the governance of assisted reproduction and the status of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender parents and same-sex partners.

Beyond Expectation looks closely at the changing contexts in which women’s experiences occurred and draws attention to complex issues such as ‘contracting’ relationships, mediating understandings of biology and genetics, and decision-making amidst various social, legal, and medical developments. The stories of her interviewees are juxtaposed with the wider public discourses about lesbian/bi/queer parenting and reproductive technology, highlighting gaps in existing legislative reforms. Most importantly, Beyond Expectation foregrounds the lived experiences of lesbian, bi, and queer women as they negotiate kinship at the intersection of reproduction, technology, and politics.

JACQUELYNE LUCE specializes in research about the relationships between gender, sexuality, bodies, medicine, science and policy. She grew up in Winnipeg and then studied cultural and medical anthropology in Toronto, before moving to British Columbia to do the fieldwork for Beyond Expectation. She now lives in Germany, where she is doing research on patients’, parents’ and health professionals’ experiences with new technologies and experimental therapies.

RACHEL EPSTEIN is the Coordinator of the Sherbourne Health Centre’s LGBTQ Parenting Network and the editor of Who’s Your Daddy? And Other Writings On Queer Parenting. In 2008 she was given the prestigious Steinert and Ferreiro Award from the Community One Foundation (formerly the Lesbian and Gay Community Appeal), in recognition of her longstanding commitment to queer activism in Canada.
